All LCD displays use progressive scanning, namely the wholeframe is built up line by line rather than odd lines followed byeven lines. Therefore, by default, 1080i will be converted to1080p, but at a frame rate of 25Hz or 29.97Hz. 1080p sets take1080i cable or satellite signal and convert (deinterlace) it,creating a progressive scan, meaning the picture is painted fromthe top to the bottom line (there are 1080 such horizontal lines)in a single pass, and this process (in the US) happens 60 times persecond. 1080p is normally run at 50Hz (Europe) or 59.94Hz (NorthAmerica). 1080i is normally half that frequency. Even if the signalis converted from 1080i to 1080p, there is no additional pictureinformation and therefore, little is gained by the conversion. Ifthe television actually does the conversion, it is worth doing acomparison between converted and unconverted to see which producesthe most pleasing results.
Why is your 1080p television showing 1080i?
HDTV is broadcast in two formats: 720p and 1080i. When your 1080p set gets these signals it has to convert them to 1080p. With 720p it scales the image to 1080p while with 1080i it deinterlaces the image. Current TVs are very good at this and so you wind up with the full 1080 lines of resolution in the end. If your 1080p is displaying 1080i on screen, it just means that is the signal…
Which is better 1080p or 1080i?
Both 1080i and 1080p have an identical resolution on the screen. For static images, there is no difference between the two. The difference between them is that 1080i uses an 'interlaced' signal format. The image is generated with 2 passes of the screen. The first draws all odd numbered lines and the second draws all even numbered lines. A 'progressive' format refreshes the whole image on every pass so it delivers a full image at…

The real reason to convert 1080i to 1080p is for archival purposes. In most cases, 1080i video is a program or film recorded off a television broadcast and 'trapped' in your DVR (until a full hard drive forces deletion). However, those who still have a working Windows Media Center (hint: if you upgraded to Windows 10, you DON'T), are able to capture live 1080i broadcast video as playable files (*.WTV). These files can then be…

1080p and 1080i both refer to the format of a video signal. Any HD television will receive the signal and display it. Therefore, the television cannot be changed from one standard to another as it simply handles the incoming signal. Currently, broadcast HD signals are almost exclusively 1080i with a few formatted as 720p. Both are considered…
